Jessie -- yes! There are certain songs that I can't hear anymore, because of the memories they stir. "Sentimental Journey," especially -- it makes me remember my grandmother, which makes me cry. :)

Home as a state of mind -- yes. Worry not -- it's just the kind of fretting that surfaces in the consciousness about this time every year for those who are teaching on temporary terms -- time for the "oh dear, I only have X more years at this job" countdown.

I've checked with the Weather Channel, and broadcasters are not forecasting any major changes in the near future. Being ready and open for a change, though -- that's certain. And I think that is the most important thing. Announcing to the universe, in some way, "Okay, I'm good now. I'm ready for it." Allowing the atmosphere to be readied for change.

Patty Griffin, yes! I have such wonderful memories of my freshman roommate listening to her ... And I have a not-so-secret passion for the musical myself. Oklahoma? Okay!

There is something to me still about Southern gospel music that will remind me of my mom. Every once in a while I'll turn on a country station and think about her. Isn't it amazing what music can do for you?

I can't really say when "I'm going home for a visit" became "I'm going to visit Mum et al." It's not that we've got a permanent home ourselves now, because we're renting. But I have a household, a community -- home as a state of mind, a state of security, maybe? I'm slightly nervous to hear (re: bloglily comment) what your terrifying change may be.

Mum's a Georgia girl, and tone-deaf truckdriver Dad liked Broadway musicals -- so think Reba McEntire singing "Oklahoma!"

My personal touchstone these days is Patty Griffin. She came to Northampton last spring, and that was the single most moving show I've ever been to. "Up to the Mountain" on her newest album just gives me goosebumps.
